As burning barricades blocked the roads entering and exiting Cornubia, the protesters, made up mostly of women, began stripping away their clothes as they sung in frustration.
One of them said they stripped in order to be taken seriously after speaking to Cllr Thango, which didn’t help. She claimed Cllr Thango had told them not to rent out rooms in their RDP flats, yet they had no choice.
One resident who did not wish to be named said they had cleaned the area as volunteers and were furious when the municipality didn’t consider them for jobs.

“We want the mayor to tell us if it’s fair to bring outsiders when we’re unemployed. We can’t move till she comes,” the angry protester said.
Mthoko Ngubane, a concerned resident, spoke on the residents’ concerns.
“We as a community are grateful to have houses in which to live but without work we cannot put food on the table. People need to work and as residents in this community, we should be selected for jobs in this community however we are never coincided. We protest here today to show our displeasure and bring our plight and need for employment to the attention of the municipality,” he said.
