Newly elected Cape Town Mayor, Dan Plato, says the city has always had a pro-poor budget and that the DA will continue to prioritise those residents who are most in need. Plato was delivering his inaugural speech as mayor after being elected by a large majority. Plato says many residents need adequate housing but the rapid urbanisation experienced in Cape Town is made even more challenging due to the legacy of apartheid spatial design. He says residents also need housing where job opportunities are available: “We need to use every cent of our available housing budget every year, and we need to make sure that the right processes are followed from the beginning so that we can avoid unnecessary delays. This is why the City has adopted a number of plans. We are hard at work on facilitating spatial transformation and also mainstreaming basic service delivery to informal settlements.”
