A 40-year-old man is set to make his second appearance in the Bronkhorstspruit magistrate’s court on Friday in connection with charges of extortion and impersonation.
The Soshanguve man was arrested last month, after he attempted to extort R300 000 from a former mayor using the alias Captain Ngobeni, said Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi.
“Lazarus Mabotja is expected to appear again at the same court on 5 July 2019, pending verification of his address and previous convictions.”

Mulaudzi said Mabotja was on parole for a previous murder and robbery conviction.
“During his arrest, he was found with a number of blank arrest warrants, search warrants, the Pretoria regional court date stamp and a fake correspondence letter with a Hawks logo. He was also in full Hawks uniform,” he said.
Mabotja’s arrest brings the number of bogus Hawks officers arrested to three, thus far.
Former police Constable Rynno du Plessis (30) was arrested at the beginning of June, in the Kgosi Mampuru II prison while Gabriel Paul (40) was arrested in Johannesburg.
Both were due to appear in court on separate dates next month.
