ACCUSED SENTENCED TO SIX YEARS IMPRISONMENT FOR STABBING EX-GIRLFRIEND
TABLE VIEW – Bennet Lawunga was handed a 6-year prison sentence by the Cape Town Regional Court for the attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend.
The crime occurred on Sunday, 18 March 2018 inside a dwelling in Site 5 informal settlement in Table View. Lawunga was served with a protection order earlier the day by officers of Table View Police Station. He was outraged and went to look for his ex-girlfriend. When he found her later that day, whilst under the influence of alcohol, he stabbed her numerous times in the head and face.
After he committed the offence he ran and was in hiding until 31 March 2018, when police traced him hiding inside a dwelling in Site 5. He was arrested and charged with assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Lawunga was remanded in custody until his sentencing. The presiding officer stated that the injuries could have caused the victim’s death, and he changed the charge to attempted murder.
Milnerton Cluster Commander, Major General Aneeqah Jordaan has welcomed the conviction and stated that alcohol was a contributing factor to the crime. She is urging victims of domestic violence to apply for protection orders.
