One of South Africa’s pre-eminent open water sea swimmers, Theodore Yach, has died in a Cape Town hospital. The Cape Long Distance Swimming Association says the 60-year old Yach has died in the Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital late yesterday. He was undergoing routine tests for an asthma complaint at the hospital when he collapsed and died there.The veteran swimmer is renowned for doing the stretch between Robben Island and the Cape Town shoreline – 180 times. He also did various other international distance swims such as the English Channel swim. Yach is survived by his wife Michelle and two sons.
