Organisers of the Slave Route Challenge, say they are encouraged by the enthusiasm of Capetonians about their history and heritage. About 10-thousand runners turned up for the ninth annual half-marathon which celebrates the role of slaves in the building of the city of Cape Town . The routes pass some of Cape Town’s prominent heritage sites from where slaves were housed, sold, tortured and executed. Event organiser, Farouk Meyer. says there are always lessons to learn from history: “Up until we started this event I don’t think anybody wanted to speak about our slave history. So I think what we try and do here is to remember what has happened in the past yes, and to ensure that we don’t make the same mistakes again. There are also other forms of slavery, not just in South Africa but all over the world. So hopefully this will highlight that.”
