Parliament says it is ready to welcome new members of both the National Assembly…

Parliament says it is ready to welcome new members of both the National Assembly and the National Council of Provinces. This follows the national and provincial elections that has seen the ANC retain its majority, albeit with a reduced mandate compared to 2014. Parliament says the first sitting of the National Assembly is provisionally scheduled for 22 May and the NCOP the following day. With almost 100 percent of the results released, the ANC is set to send 230 members to the National Assembly followed by the DA with 83 MPs. Both parties benches will be smaller than the 249 and 89 respectively that they had in 2014. The EFF will see a significant boost to its numbers as it is assured of over 40 members compared to the 26 they had after the 2014 elections. The Freedom front Plus and the IFP are also sending bigger delegations to the legislature with 14 and 10 respectively. Two new parties, the African Transformation Movement and Good are likely to each have two representatives. The allocation is subject to a complicated calculation that could see smaller parties with less than the threshold figure also being allocated seats.
