Local Phoenix swimmers, Xavier Thi Beukes and Arjun Ramkaran, have done their community and swim clubs proud after their outstanding performance at the Midmar Mile.
Arjun, an 11-year-old in grade seven at Hopeville Primary School, swam seven Midmar Miles which is a total of 11,2km for the two days.
He swam three consecutive team swim events on Saturday and four consecutive individual swim events on Sunday.
The young swimming star swims for Marine Life Saving Club’s Nippers Programme.

Arjun earned the coveted Gold Cap in the 2018 Dolphin Mile. His dad appealed to Midmar to allow Arjun to swim all eight events, however, he was only allowed to swim seven due to his young age.
Arjun and Xavier are cousins and have been swimming together for the past five years. Xavier is a 15-year-old pupil at Phoenix Tech Arjun’s mentor.
In order to acclimate for his main event, he swam three team events on Saturday.
In the event on Sunday, he swam with the world’s best and finished in a time of 21 min 8 sec, earning a top 40 finish. Xavier swims for Pisces Swim Club and is also a SA international under-16 swimmer.
The boys were sponsored by QR Engineering in Mt Edgecombe and Smart Clothing in Phoenix Industrial Park.
When speaking on their achievement, Xavier said, “It was a challenging but deeply rewarding experience. Arjun and I both did exceedingly well at the event, however, there are many more challenges to come.”
Both boys now train to swim events with the Cape Long Distance Swimming Association.
