Police, Law Enforcement and traffic agencies are monitoring the situation at Mount Pleasant outside Hermanus in the Overstrand Municipality. Residents of Zwelihle last night burnt tyres, apparently because they are disgruntled over the Mayor making no mention of their housing plight at a recent council meeting. The Overstrand municipality says in a statement that provision has been made in the budget for their housing needs, but the mayor did not speak about it, because council was still awaiting a final recommendation from the ward committee. The mayor however received the recommendation yesterday and the municipality will start preparing the terrain next week. The names of the beneficiaries have been identified and will be informed soon. Protests over housing have sporadically broken out since March this year, causing damage to municipal infrastructure and equipment of millions of rand. The R43 and Mbeki roads are open but residents have been advised to drive with extra caution in the vicinity of Mount Pleasant. (picture: archive)
