Relief efforts are under way in Town two in Khayelitsha where a strong south easterly wind hampered fire fighting efforts this morning. One person has been confirmed dead. The City of Cape Town has revised the number of dwellings that were destroyed in the fire from a thousand to 200. Officials say the smoke and windy conditions made it very difficult to determine an accurate number. Residents have already started rebuilding their dwellings. Some are trying to to salvage whatever they can from the rubble, but for most of the fire victims, all they have left are the clothes they are wearing. They say they have nowhere else to go.

  1. This is extremely sad, but one has to be practical here, we allow shacks to be built on top of each due to extreme need, caused by the huge influx of people from the eastern cape for work. But here’s the kicker, the uncontrollable breeding, has led to the huge population growth in the poorer communities, creating this unnecessary drain on the infrastructure, that no municipality can cope with. There! I’ve said it, now label me racist….STOP MAKING BABIES, AND WE KNOW THATS HALF THE PROBLEM?

  2. And they say Fire fighters dont work after hours. I salute all thr hard working men and woman in our fire service they still give it their best eventhou they get under paid

  3. Can they quickly organize study materials and places to stay for the meantime to all students especially matriculants of that area.
