Residents of Karatara near Knysna in the Southern Cape have spoken about their anguish after being evacuated from their homes. Around 300 people are currently at the local community hall after fires threatened their homes. Eight people have been confirmed dead in the Karatara fires. Residents say they hope their houses will be saved. “We feel very sad about the fire. It started burning yesterday afternoon and the smoke was terrible where we live in Bergvallei. It was a dark cloud and lots of dust and tonight the fire moved in our direction in Bergvallei. It was very bad. I had to move my children to my father there at Karewater for safety. And this morning the police had to remove us because the fire was close to us. “
