Reaction Unit South Africa responded to the scene after being informed that multiple shots were fired at a white Toyota Fortuner.
Upon arrival, the officers found the three ‘hysterical’ children about 40 metres away from the bullet-riddled SUV. The driver was assessed and unfortunately, due to his extensive injuries, he passed away at the scene.
Witnesses at the scene stated that the vehicle was approaching the single lane steel bridge when a red VW Polo stopped next to it.
The unknown occupants from the Polo opened fire at the driver before speeding off towards the Verulam CBD. “The children aged 13, 11 and eight were seated behind the driver and were not injured,” a report issued by the security company stated.
