SANDF HELP QUELL VIOLENCE IN CAPE TOWN
“OPERATION PROSPER” IS EXPECTED FROM JULY UNTIL OCTOBER
Bloodshed over the past seven months in Cape Town’s crime ridden suburbs has claimed the lives of more than 2,000 people. Western Cape government officials said almost half are gang-related. The deployment of several hundred SANDF soldiers to gang strongholds as part of “Operation PROSPER” will happen from July to October, although the Defence Minister suggested on Wednesday (July 17) the “exit strategy” will be determined by ongoing intelligence gathering. South African soldiers were deployed in a bid to help quell the escalating gang violence which officials have compared to a “war zone.” According to official police statistics, Cape Town has among South Africa’s highest murder rates with 3,674 murders recorded in the Western Cape last year.
