A 25-year-old security guard died after he was stabbed in his chest by three armed men, who made off with his bag, on Silverglen Drive, on Saturday afternoon.

According to the owner of Ekuqalweni Security Management, Sam Pillay, his security officer, Nkanyiso Kenneth Shange, was walking home after work when he was attacked.
“He worked for my security company for about six months and used the Silverglen Drive route to and from work. He only had an old cellphone, his jacket and his lunchbox in his bag, which he was robbed for,” he said.

A passerby noticed him lying on the side of the road and notified Pillay that he was injured.

“I arrived within five minutes and thought I would rush him to hospital, but when I got there and checked his pulse, he had already passed on. This was a merciless killing and we hope the perpetrators are apprehended. We offer our condolences to his family,” added Pillay.

Communications officer of the Bayview SAPS, W/O Collin Chetty, said the body of a 25-year-old man was found alongside Silverglen Drive.

“The deceased had one stab wound to the upper chest area. The family of the deceased was present at the scene and indicated that the deceased used the isolated area as a thoroughfare to walk home from work. The identity of the suspects and motive of the killing is unknown at this stage. A case of murder is being investigated by detectives at the Bayview SAPS,” added W/O Chetty.

Chairman of the Silverglen Selfhelp Committee, Shaun Hammond, said the three suspects first attempted to rob a woman at the E Section entrance shortcut on Silverglen Drive and when she screamed, they fled.
He added that the road is safe for mobile users but pedestrians need to be alert and walk in groups.

“The war against crime is continuous. We have increased patrols on Silverglen Drive and we are doing everything that is necessary to make sure that it is safe for use,” he said.
Meanwhile, a security guard from TWN Security, who was based in Camper Drive, in Havenside, was attacked and robbed while on duty, on Sunday night.

According to owner of the security company, Navin Subbiah, two men approached the guard from the back and accosted him.

“He was held by his vest and one of the men held a gun to his back. They led him across the road and took him into the bush, where he was robbed of his cellphone, wallet and two-way radio. He was told to wait in the bush until they leave. We searched for the perpetrators but they had fled by the time we were notified of the incident. However, we found his wallet lying on the road. I urge residents to stand together if we want to beat crime. Being your brother’s keeper is of vital importance at this stage and we need to take care of not only ourselves but each other also. That is the only way we will make a difference,” said Subbiah.
