The distraught mother of a man brutally stabbed in Raisethorpe on Friday has told of the heart-wrenching pain of losing her only son, Shumendran Pillay (35).
Kanambal Pillay, from Benoni, Gauteng, said when her phone rang and she saw her son’s caller ID, she never suspected that she would be fielding a call from a stranger informing her of his stabbing.
“It was around 1:30pm when my world came down crashing on me. The lady on the other line phoned in an extreme state of panic,” said Kanambal.
Kanambal said she immediately informed her son’s cousin, Ricardo Mahadave, who happened to have been in the area at the time
“Ricardo immediately gave me the assurance that he would make his way to the Daymed Hospital. Unfortunately, when he got to the hospital, he was told that my son had not made it,” said Pillay.
Pillay, a motor mechanic, was employed at Eddels factory. Anesh Mewalall (35) has been charged with Pillay’s murder. He appeared in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrates Court on Monday and is expected to return to the same court to launch his bail application next Tuesday.
