Western Cape Police have confiscated close to 15 million rands worth of abalone and arrested two suspects during two busts over the weekend. In the first seizure officers arrested a 20 year old Chinese National, and 30 year old Zimbabwean man in Parow at an abalone drying plant. Five-point-four million rands worth of the delicacy was confiscated. Police spokesperson, Andrè Traut, says following the mens’ arrest, officers were led to another drying plant in Tygerdal, Goodwood. Police seized abalone and equipment worth an estimated nine and a half million rand. No arrests were made. Traut says they consider the operation a step closer in breaking the back of the lucrative abalone trade in the Western Cape.
