Residents of Johannesburg’s Alexandra township were once again up in arms against the city’s government and its mayor, Herman Mashaba, as hundreds joined for the second ‘Alex Total Shutdown’ protests in the country’s largest city on Wednesday.
Disgruntled residents gathered at the Alexandra stadium and burned tyres to obstruct roads before marching towards the mayor’s office amid tight security to protest over the prevailing poor living conditions in the township. Demonstrators were also seen singing and dancing outside the mayor’s office.
Themeni Manyana, a resident of Alexandra spoke about the issues at hand saying that “I can walk you back into Alexandra. You will start smelling the dump, you will hear the toilet, shitty things happening.”
The ‘Alex Total Shutdown’ protests started in April this year, protesting against crime, housing and poor service delivery affecting the Alexandra community.
