Stellenbosch University says it is working hard to address major imbalances of the past. Students have expressed mixed views on transformation at the institution. The subject has come under the spotlight as Stellenbosch University commemorates it’s centenary this year. Rector and Vice Chancellor Professor Wim de Villiers says changes to the language policy were adopted last year with all academic courses now available in English. He says 24 percent of academic staff are black and the institution will increase this figure. “The Rector’s Strategic Personnel Fund which was a designated amount of money that was dedicated to that, around 70 million rand that was dedicated to that to specifically attract, retain and promote academic personnel as well as top support staff from the designated groups and that’s actually resulted in probably more than 40, 45 positions and folks added to that so we really want to continue with that initiative. I think it has worked well.”
