The 20th annual Cape Town International Jazz Festival got under way in the Mother…

The 20th annual Cape Town International Jazz Festival got under way in the Mother City last night. This year’s instalment showcases a diversity of cultures and musical styles. With over 40 local and international acts on the line-up, the event draws thousands of jazz lovers to the Mother City each year. Festival organiser, Billy Domingo, says the aim of the festival is to transfer skills to the younger generation of musicians: “The next generation of technicians, the next generation of musicians is going to come out of these training programmes. It can’t be about Billy and the companies, because it takes a village to raise a child, my team is huge. It employs 3750 on this event, these are people who earn money to feed their families. The GDP is hundreds of millions. I just think the training and development will create the next Jimmy Dludlu’s, the next Hugh Hasekela’s and that’s what iss necessary.”
