The agricultural Research Council in Stellenbosch has called for the increased protection of bees…

The agricultural Research Council in Stellenbosch has called for the increased protection of bees in the Western Cape. This after millions of bees have died due to pesticide poisoning in the Constantia area. Senior Bee Researcher at the Bureau, Mike Allsopp, says further tests still needed to be conducted in order to confirm that it was the pesticide Fipronil that led to the deaths of the bees. Fipronil is a pesticide which is used by wine farmers to protect their crops against insects. Allsopp says bees are critical for the sustainability of agriculture because they pollinate crops which are later harvested.
