The Cape Cultural Carnival Events Committee and the Cape Town Minstrel Carnival Association have withdrawn their case in the High Court in Cape Town which was set to resume on Friday. The organisations lodged an urgent application on 16 December against the City and the Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association, KKKA to seek relief with regard to the use of the Athlone Stadium. This after the City declined their event permit applications for competitions and road marches. The KKKA is the event organiser of the annual Tweede Nuwejaar Road March and was granted a permit for their annual competitions at the Athlone Stadium. During earlier discussions in chambers, the judge requested that the two minstrel bodies conclude a Memorandum of Agreement detailing how both associations could be accommodated at the Athlone Stadium. They failed to reach an agreement and the matter was postponed to Friday. The City’s JP Smith says it is the seventh High Court application that the Cape Town Minstrel Association has brought against the City in the past three years. The City won six cases with costs and the seventh application has now been withdrawn.
