The carcass of a humpback whale has washed up at the Brenton-on-Sea beach at Knysna in the Southern Cape. This is just one of several whales that have washed up on Garden Route beaches this year. The beach has been closed until further notice. Knysna Mayor, Mark Willemse, says they’re working with SANParks and Cape to remove the carcass: “ Early this morning the authorities went down to the beach to inspect together with our municipal disaster management and Cape Nature as well as Sanparks. And they in the process of bringing in equipment to dispose of the carcass. It is a humpback whale that is highly decomposed. The beaches are closed and will remain closed until the area has been cleared by authorities.”
