The chairperson of Parliament’s Police Committee, Francois Beukman, has called for stronger measures by police to combat gangsterism and gun violence around the country. Beukman’s met with a Cape Town-based group whose members marched to Parliament yesterday. This came as Police Minister Bheki Cele announced the deployment of a well-armed police Tactical Response Team to Westbury in Johannesburg. Communities in Westbury as well as the Cape Flats have been complaining about the scourge of crime, gangs and drugs. Beukman has listed some of the measures that police could implement in gangster hotspots. “There should be a step up by crime intelligence in its projects and its feet on the ground. Furthermore, proper evaluation and rotation of station commanders and cluster commanders in these areas, but very importantly, high visibility and use of specialised units. Those are short term measures that can assist in the situation”, said Beukman. (Pic: File)
