The City of Cape Town is to embark on a programme to give greater…

The City of Cape Town is to embark on a programme to give greater support to the clothing and textile industry. The city’s Economic Opportunities and Asset Management Directorate has announced plans to focus on skills development and training in the industry. Mayco member for the directorate, James Vos, visited a number of companies. Vos says the city is considering, among others, an increase in procurement from local manufacturers, looking to the continent for export opportunities of local goods and to conduct a skills audit to determine where there are gaps. The City will host regular sessions with key roleplayers to collaborate on growth opportunities while also identifying blockages to find solutions. Vos says delivering a skills pipeline for the industry will help position it as part of Cape Town’s economic opportunity agenda. The clothing and textile industry in the city employs nearly 25 000 people with exports of over R3.5-billion in 2018.
