The City of Cape Town’s Mayoral Committee has recommended that Keizergracht be renamed to its original name, Hanover Street. The recommendation will be tabled at the next Council meeting for councillors’ consideration and approval, at the end of the month. The District Six Working Committee requested the name change in June. Mayor, Dan Plato says during the public participation process, an overwhelming 96 percent of participants supported the name change: “I’m glad from the City of Cape Town’s side that we could be part of changing the name to Hanover Street. Now that the mayoral committee made their decision, we’ll forward this information to council for ratification. We hope that this will restore some dignity for many of the claimants, we hope that this will ease many of the pains they had to endure.”
