The Communications Workers Union (CWU) claims unions have not yet been consulted on any retrenchments at the SABC. The Section 189 process requires the employer to consult unions and employees before embarking on any retrenchments. CWU representatives were speaking to their members at the SABC offices in Auckland Park in Johannesburg. The SABC executive has announced it is considering the retrenchment of close to a 1000 permanent SABC staff and 1200 freelance workers. The CWU has called for a national shutdown at lunch time this Friday at the public broadcaster. The union’s General Secretary Aubrey Tshabalala: “We want to be part and parcel of a turnaround strategy in terms of our input as workers so that we make sure that the SABC going forward is viable, self-sustaining so that, that strategy is endorsed by all parties. You can’t have a turnaround strategy alone and come of that turnaround strategy and say, “I’ve consulted with unions.” To be clear, unions were not consulted.”
