The elderly are already especially vulnerable to crime (in addition to health issues) due to their helplessness at that advanced age. But do you know what puts them at even FURTHER risk? It’s the fact that many of them (not all) are forced to live ALONE (or are hardly paid attention to) at that age. We, the younger generation (their adult children, grandkids, etc) are much more interested in our own pursuits, responsibilities, pleasures, families, etc and we have have either abandoned the elderly to their fate – or we afford them far less care and attention than they should be given. Maybe not always but we often share complicity in the terrible things that happen to them. Hence, my poem:
Why cry now, when they’ve already gone?
What good does it do, if now we mourn?
We left them alone, and sealed their fate
These tears we’re shedding, are pointless and late.
