The human rights and Palestine solidarity organisation, BDS South Africa, says they fully support…

The human rights and Palestine solidarity organisation, BDS South Africa, says they fully support a council vote at the University of Cape Town (UCT) today which might restrict interaction between UCT and Israeli academic institutions. The resolution is apparently not a boycott against all universities – only those operating in the West Bank, or the occupied Palestinian territories. BDS spokesperson, Tisetso Magama: “It allows the institution to take a principled view on human rights violations in the occupied Palestinian territories and so from our point of view, we support that proposed resolution on the table, because it targets institutions that are complicit in occupied Palestinian territories.” Executive Director of the Free Market Foundation, Leon Louw, says however, the process is discriminatory and unlawful: “Students have a right and universities have an obligation to teach all perspectives and all views, not subject to censorship of people according to national origin, whether they’re Palestinians, Israeli’s or anybody else. So we obtained a legal opinion and the opinion says it’s very clear the university may not use public funds to discriminate on the basis of the ideology or philosophy of members of the council.”

  1. Funny how quickly criticism of the State of Israel and their policies towards Palestinians is then turned around and called anti Semitism.
