The Institute for the Healing of Memories has described the planting of a tree…

The Institute for the Healing of Memories has described the planting of a tree whose seeds survived the Hiroshima bombings 73 years ago as a symbol of life and hope. The Japanese Embassy in Cape Town has donated the tree to be planted at the Afrikaans Language Monument in Paarl, with a message of hope, friendship and resilience. The seedlings were cultivated at the Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens in Cape Town. Fatima Swartz of the Institute explains: “It talks to our connection with nature and it talks to our ability as part of nature to survive the most horrendous action. They took the seedlings, they nursed back to life, they gave it love, they gave it attention and now its glowing its blooming and being planted all over the world again.”
