The Overstrand Municipality says a male dolphin calf has washed up on Kleinmond’s main…

The Overstrand Municipality says a male dolphin calf has washed up on Kleinmond’s main beach. Meredith Thornton of The Overberg Stranding Network has identified it as a common dolphin. She says judging by its length, which was 96cm, the calf was very young. There were no external signs as to what may have caused its demise. Thornton says the animal is being kept frozen and a cast will be made of it for educational purposes. “It’s not unusual to have calf’s strand, its just not very often. dolphins often lose their first calf or perhaps an animal was born it’s sick or something’s wrong with it. so we may not even be able to determine exactly what is wrong with this animal but it will be a good opportunity to collect some skin samples measurements. The cast of the animal will be used for educational purposes.” (photo: Overstrand municipality)
