The R44 between Gordon’s Bay and Rooi Els remains closed to traffic due to…

The R44 between Gordon’s Bay and Rooi Els remains closed to traffic due to thick smoke caused by an extensive vegetation fire. The fire, now in it’s seventh day, is burning high up in the mountain slopes in the Kogel Bay Nature Reserve, near Gordon’s Bay. The fire, which started in Betty’s Bay on New Year’s Day, has burnt down thousands of hectares of vegetation as well as a house and a cottage. City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue spokesperson, Theo Layne, says the fire is currently inaccessible to Fire and Rescue teams.” We’ve still got three vehicles on the scene at the Kogel Bay fire that’s on the R44. They are mainly monitoring. They remained there throughout the night and that was to ensure that no flare-ups occurred. The fire is still being fanned by a strong South-Easterly wind, but it’s above the mountain slopes which is not reachable by the fire and rescue service.” A 34-year old suspect is appearing in the Caledon Magistrate’s court today on suspicion of causing the fire in the Overstrand municipality on New year’s day.
