The second largest share of government’s R1.83 trillion budget goes to Social Development. Finance Minister, Tito Mboweni, in his maiden budget speech in the National Assembly has allocated R278.4 billion rand to Social Development. The cash will be used for – among other things – the old age grant, social security and the child support grant. Mboweni says government is determined to help the vulnerable: “In the fight against poverty and inequality, government has allocated R567 billion rand for social grant payments in 2019. The grant values will increase as follows: R80 increase for old age, disability, war veterans and care dependency grants; R40 increase for the foster care grant to R1000; the child support grant will increase to R420 in April and R430 in October.”

  1. Government should really look at the child grants… I know of two young mothers younger than thirty years old who has six & seven children each. I feel this is unfair that we should fit the bill for these irresponsible mothers. What happened to birth control?
