The South African Jewish Board of Deputies has criticised the Stellenbosch University for allegedly cancelling sessions with Israeli and Palestinian speakers where they were earlier scheduled to speak on the topic ‘Recognition, Reparation, Reconciliation: The Light and Shadow of Historical Trauma at an upcoming conference at the institution. SAJBD says this is contrary to good academic standards and attempts at reconciliation. Director, Wendy Kahn says the university has simply bowed to pressure from outside influences.”They also cancelled sessions by a Palestinian academic by the name of Dr. Dajani, we find this is complete antithesis of academic freedom and we are very concerned by this move it’s very ironic since the session at the conference is titled ‘Recognition, Reparation, Reconciliation.” Stellenbosch University says the withdrawal of Israeli delegates from the conference is as a result of circumstances beyond it’s control and the organising committee. Rector Wim de Villiers says one of the objectives of the conference is to bring people together to deliberate on questions relating to historical wounding and haunting legacies as a result of trans-generational trauma. He says it’s regrettable that the Isareli/Palestian narrative has spilled over to the conference, achieving exactly the opposite of the vision for the event. The five- day conference is set to start on Wednesday.
