The South African Navy says attempts to salvage and retrieve the vessel Tug de Mist in the still water basin of Simon’s Town harbour has been put on hold for the weekend. SA navy spokesperson, Commander Greyling van den Berg, says efforts to retrieve the vessel was halted yesterday after they realised the interior has some holes which impedes the airlifting process. He says the 39-year old vessel which sank last Saturday, was decommissioned and replaced three years ago. Van den Berg says the salvage operation is proceeding slowly due to the fact that they using internal resources and divers to enable them to gain more experience. “What we are currently doing, we are attempting to determine where all the leaks are and then to seal her up. Which will allow us then to once we have airtight compartments, that will give us the necessary lift we will them attempt in this coming week.” (Photo: Archive)
