Marijuana may have been announced legal in private living spaces by the Constitutional Court last September, however, the use of it in public and selling it is still illegal.
Many people have a misunderstanding when it comes to the law and are still smoking marijuana in public as well as still selling it.
On January 22, the Sophiatown police officers conducted an operation in the Westdene area. Communications officer from the Sophiatown police station, Jerbes de Bruyn said that they searched at various hotspots and identified houses in the Westdene area.
According to the officer, while they were searching at one of the houses in 2nd avenue they found 55 packets of marijuana and R50 in cash.

“The owner of the room where the dagga was found was not at the scene and therefore no arrests were made. It is alleged that dagga is being sold at the premises where the dagga was found,” explained officer de Bruyn.
The communications officer appeals to the public to continue phoning the police station for such activities and to report crime and any suspicious activities.
“Members of the public can stay anonymous. It is still illegal to sell dagga or to smoke it in public,” added the communications officer.
If you have any information on crime happening in your area, you are urged to phone the emergency number 10111 or the Crime Stop Number 0800 10111.
