The vegetation fire at Pearly Beach near Grabouw outside Cape Town has been extinguished, but authorities are keeping a close watch due to strong winds in the area. The Fire Chief of the Overberg District Municipality, Reynard Geldenhuys, says they have put in a big effort since yesterday afternoon when the flames ignited. He says it took 20 firefighters almost four hours to contain the blaze. They were supported by four fire trucks and a helicopter. The fire was also monitored throughout the night: “It was watched during the night, we deployed another team this morning to make sure that it stays out, so there’s a team mopping up making sure that it does not flare up again, because the wind is very strong, we need to keep a sharp eye on it, landowners are also busy there ensuring there’s not flare ups on that line, thick veld and fynbos were burning, that we were busy with.”
