The vegetation fires in the Grabouw area in Overberg region of the Western Cape have been extinguished, but firefighters are monitoring the scene for possible flare-ups. Fire Chief Officer in the Overberg District Municipality, Reynard Geldenhuys, says about 20 hectares of old plantations at three spots north of Grabouw have been razed. Geldenhuys says they suspect that the fires were started deliberately: “We had the fires maliciously set, someone was walking around and starting fires, it’s huge open spaces and children will go around and light it up, or for other reasons people will start fires in that area, we call it malicious ignitions, unfortunately it’s such an expansive area and bush that you can’t find the culprit, but if you look at the pattern and randomness of it, it can only be set, no other cause for it.”
