The Western Cape Ministry of Local Government has expressed its condolences to the family of a pilot who was killed during fire-fighting operations near Vermaaklikheid in the Southern Cape. Seasoned pilot, Nico Heyns, is a local hero who also helped with the Knysna fires last year. It is believed that the was killed on impact. Working on Fire dispatched a Huey helicopter to the fire this morning. The inferno ignited on Sunday. The cause of the crash is not yet known. Spokesperson for the Ministry of Local Government, James-Brent Styan: “The Western Cape Provincial Fire Services has already deployed resources from the Overberg region to the area. And the City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services have been put on standby to provide additional back up if required. The Minister expressed his condolences on behalf of the provincial government. The family, friends and community of fire-fighters are in our thoughts at this time.” At least seven houses and several other properties have been destroyed in the fire.
