The Western Cape Ministry of Local Government has urged all George residents to exercise extreme caution during the ongoing fires in the area. Spokesperson for the Ministry of Local Government, James-Brent Styan says the Western Cape Disaster Management Centre has been deployed to the Quteniqua Pass area. He says ground crews are actively working to suppress the fire lines. The Quteniqua Pass has been closed to traffic until further notice. Styan elaborates: “A back-burn will be implemented today from the railway line up the mountain towards the fire line. The Outeniqua Pass has been closed to motorists. Please use Robertson Pass as an alternative. Motorists are requested to proceed with caution. The public is urgently requested to refrain from recreational hiking today and over the next few days.”
