The Western Cape provincial government and the Manenberg Community Steering Committee have signed a multi-million rand agreement for major upgrades of Manenberg. This follows a three year public participation process on ways to prevent violence through urban upgrading projects. The upgrades will include a 600 bed regional hospital, a youth lifestyle campus, new schools and parks. Manenberg was established in 1966. Over the years, it has become overcrowded with a high incidence of crime and gang activity. Premier Helen Zille says the aim is to transform Manenberg into a place of opportunity and break the vicious cycle of gangsterism
