Two men, aged 23 and 40, were remanded in police custody until July 19, following their brief appearance in the Esikhaleni Magistrates Court on charges of theft and possession of suspected stolen property, last Thursday.
Provincial police spokeswoman, Col Thembeka Mbhele said it is alleged that the accused had stolen batteries form cellphone towers in the area.

“In the early hours of last Wednesday morning, Esikhaleni police officers were conducting routine crime prevention duties when they received a report regarding a motor vehicle, travelling towards Gobandlovu, with stolen property,” she said.
Police immediately followed up and spotted the vehicle.
“One person alighted from the motor vehicle and fled while police apprehended two others. They were found in the possession of eight tower batteries,” she said.

The police continued with their investigations, which led them to Ndwedwe, where a further 13 batteries were recovered.
Investigations are ongoing.
