IN THEIR four short years on earth, the twins were always together. And even when they tragically died they weren’t separated for long.AFTER ONLY EIGHT DAYS THE LITTLE GIRLS WERE UNITED ONCE MORE.On the night she died, Bertha woke up her sister to say goodbye.“I heard Bertha waking up Sara.“She said goodbye to her sister in a weak voice,” said Bertha Simbini (26), mother of the twins.“Bertha died during the night.”That was on 1 September. Last Sunday Sara also died. The father of the twins, Silipe Tete (29) from Winnie Mandela in Ekurhuleni, said he didn’t understand the death of the girls.Silipe said the day Bertha died she was playing like the rest of the children. But that night she wouldn’t have her supper.“We thought it could be the change of weather and only fed her soft porridge,” he said.Later, while their mother was watching TV, she heard Bertha saying goodbye to her sister.“She went to sleep but when her mother tried to wake her up, she didn’t move. We called an ambulance. She was declared dead by the paramedics and later taken to a private mortuary,” said Silipe. He said they were still trying to raise money to bury Bertha when Sara followed. The family survives on piece work as neither Silipe nor the girls’ mother, Bertha, is employed. It is unclear what caused the death of the twins. Bertha died in her sleep. Paramedics declared her dead at the house. Silipe said after their daughter Bertha died they tried everything in their power with practise traditional rituals to prevent Sara’s death.“We laid Betha’s clothes out and made Sara jump over them and fed her on Bertha’s plate to prevent her from following. But it didn’t prevent Sara from following her sister,” said Silipe. In the early hours of Sunday morning a week later, Sara started vomiting and had diarrhoea.“We rushed her to hospital. The doctor said she was dehydrated and later we received a call to say she had died,” said Silipe.“My head is spinning. I don’t know why my children died so suddenly. We don’t know how we are going to bury them and are pleading for help. My children have been lying in a mortuary for so long.”
