Two hundred and 80 international players from 32 countries will this weekend take part in the 2018 Five A Side Football World Championships in Cape Town. It’s the biggest amateur football tournament in the world and the fifth year that it’s held. CEO of Fives Futbol, Adam Fine says South Africa now joins the ranks of iconic countries that have previously hosted the tournament including Dubai, Thailand and China. Fine says the fast paced, action packed 20 minute, five a side soccer format has been booming internationally over the last decade. This year’s championship kicked off at the beginning of the year with half a million players competing in knock out games from over 60 countries in a six month long qualifying league. The games start at noon on Saturday at Fives Futbol, Century City. Entrance is free and spectators can expect action packed festivities and entertainment both on and off the pitch.
