Two passengers have been injured after they jumped from a burning train between Blackheath and Melton Rose station this evening. Metrorail spokesperson, Riana Scott , says the commuters, “who received minor injuries”, were treated on the scene. Scott says the train was enroute to Cape Town Station from Strand station: “One motorcoach and an adjoining passenger carriage were damaged. Metrorail recovery efforts are in progress to remove the train set before track and electrical infrastructure can be assessed.” She says both lines will remain closed during recovery efforts until such time as technical teams conduct assessments and declare the lines safe for train operations. Commuters are advised to make use of alternative transport arrangements between Kuils River/Strand and Muldersvlei. The cause of the fire is as yet unconfirmed.
