Two people have been arrested for alleged illegal possession of Pangolin scales in Muizenberg. Pangolins are the world’s most trafficked mammals. Hawks spokesperson, Captain Philani Nkwalase, says the two were arrested at a local shopping centre after being followed by police detectives. They appeared briefly in court in Muizenberg and the case has been postponed to the 19th of July. Nkwalase elaborates: “They were arrested at a food outlet inside a shopping centre in Muizenberg. Their arrest follows a joint intelligence operation by the Hawks Serious Organised Crime investigating team with the SAPS provincial flying squad which found the duo in possession of pangolin scales.” In a separate incident, two men have been arrested at Plattekloof for the illegal possession of four elephant tusks which were concealed in their vehicle. They’ve been released on bail of R5000 each.
