University of Cape Town, Vice Chancellor, Mamokgethi Phakeng has announced that the historic Jameson Memorial Hall at UCT is now renamed the Sarah Baartman Memorial Hall. This follows a council decision to break away from the colonial past. Phakeng was speaking during her robing ceremony at the institution, accompanied by special graduation ceremony. Saartjie Baartman was born in 1789 at the Gamtoos river as a member of the Khoikhoi. She was taken to England in 1810, where she was paraded as a sexual freak, despite not being naked. She died in 1815 in Paris of an inflammatory disease. Her remains were returned to South Africa in 2002 and she was buried in the Eastern Cape.
