Hoërskool Hendrik Verwoerd will soon be known as Rietondale High School.
This follows after the name was approved by the department this week and announced by Gauteng MEC of education, Panyaza Lesufi on Twitter on Monday.
Today, we formally approved the renaming of Höerskool HF Verwoerd to Rietodale Secondary School. My mission in this world is to reverse everything this man called Verwoerd has done to our education system. Others names like Jan Smuts will also fall #NomoreHöerskoolHFVerwoerd pic.twitter.com/pUdoq3KkQJ

“My goal in this world is to remove everything that this man has done in our education system. Other names like Jan Smuts will also fall,” he said on a Twitter post.
I respect you! How I wish we can move forward, together, with that approach than have people like @ErnstRoets who think the past must be defended at all costs https://t.co/fjHD5MhTzQ

Department spokesperson Steve Mabona confirmed the announcement to Rekord on Tuesday.
“This is a good thing, especially because it was initiated by the school,” Mabona said.
“We fully support it.”
The name of the school was initially announced on Twitter as Rietondale Secondary School.

Although upon enquiry to the department, Mabona explained that high school and secondary school had the same meaning to them.
“The school may be known as Rietondale High School,” he said.
School governing body president Olga Veldsman said the school was pleased that the name was approved.
“We also found out through Twitter on Monday and we are now waiting for feedback and further communication from the department,” she said.
In February last year, the school opened its name change to the public so that they could also make suggestions for a new name.
Everyone – learners, teachers, parents, residents and former learners – with a vested interest, was invited to participate in the selection of the new name.

The proposals were closed in March last year and submitted to the department shortly after.
The school’s governing body submitted a declaration of intent to change its name to the department back in July 2016.
Veldsman said the name change was delayed when long-standing principal Hennie du Toit retired and the governing body wanted to have a new principal in place before continuing.
“The period of uncertainty that usually accompanies big changes like this requires strong leadership from the principal and the student governing body president,” she said.
A new principal, Debré Bam, was appointed in October 2017 and the school “could finally proceed with the process”.
