The second edition of the Sisonke Challenge brought in a larger field with the category prizes for the participants in the 10km race being welcomed by all.
The 7am start for both the 5km and 10km participants saw a merry field take up the Inanda Dam challenge.
Nestled in the picturesque hills surrounding the dam, runners started with great enthusiasm as they careered downhill before the ascent to the top of the hill- for some, resembling the infamous ‘Struggle Hill’ that they encountered in the Mandela Marathon in Howick.
VAC, similar to last year, posted pleasing runs with Vukani Maphumulo taking his second podium finish in 39 minutes securing first position in the 35 to 39 year category.

Sarah Naidoo took in a fast-paced third position in the ladies 50 category in 1: 10. Velvan Nair converted his form on the training runs into a well deserved 58 minute sub-one hour despite the challenging hill that was the undoing of all runners as they took in the extraordinary view on top of the dam overlooking the Inanda Dam and surrounding areas.

Sarah Naidoo came in the leader of the ladies pack in 1: 10, securing her podium finish in her age category ahead of Cynthia Zondi and Ronnie Naidoo in 1: 18.
Pam Zwane followed through in a pleasing 1: 20 while Shirley Narainsamy eased through in 1: 23.
Beena Maharaj walked through in third position in 1: 30, while Tharushka Sookoo completed the 10km in 1: 43.
Some VAC members opted to complete the club’s 5km challenge runs and used the 5km of the Inanda Dam challenge that still took in the ‘Struggle Hill’ experience.
Club chairman, Jaya Kisten, Brenda Peters, Anand Naicker and Daniel Singh posted a one hour finish and completed team VAC in the Sisonke Inanda Dam Challenge.
Time trials and airport runs resume every Saturday and Sundays respectively at 6am. For more information, call 083-783-6363.
