Various sports organisations have come out in support of SAFA’s placard demonstration in Athlone against the City’s decision that they move their operations from the Athlone stadium. A group of about 50 people are protesting along the Klipfontein road near the stadium, holding up plackards with messages such as Fix our facilities and Hands off. The president of the South African Football Association in Cape Town, Bennet Bailey, says the city has failed them by not maintaining the stadium. He says the Athlone stadium is the home of football. The City issued an instruction in January to all occupants of the stadium to move out of the facility by the end of January. This is due to various non-compliance issues with national safety regulations. The City has offered SAFA alternative accommodation at the nearby Vygieskraal stadium.
