Elderly couples have recently been the targets of violent crime in the area.
Communications officer of Verulam SAPS, Cpt H Kisten, said, “Brazen criminals are attacking elderly couples as they are seen as soft targets.”
This comes after two incidents were reported in the space of a week.

“In the first case, an elderly couple were murdered in their home and the victim’s vehicle was taken together with other property. In the second incident, an elderly couple had just entered their house when they were held up by two suspects who assaulted and robbed them of their valuables,” added Cpt Kisten.
“We are therefore urging the elderly, especially those that are staying by themselves, are not to open the premises anyone before confirming their identity,” said Cpt Kisten.

He added that the elderly should not return home during late hours of the evenings and to be wary of strangers standing near their homes.

Elderly residents must ensure that their home is fitted with an alarm system and they must know how to use the panic button in case of emergency.
“If you are suspicious of an individual you can contact the police on 079-500-1242. You may also contact security companies. We are also urging family members to be in constant contact with their elderly family members, checking on their safety and well-being,” said Cpt Kisten.
